Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) (1950)
Jackson Pollock, American, 1912–1956
Enamel on Canvas, 207"x105", The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Jackson Pollock is said to be America’s greatest artist of the 20th century. His career gained momentum when he and his expansive ‘drip’ paintings were featured in Life magazine in 1949. The article exposed his creativity and introduced his new and modern approach to the world, making both himself and Abstract Expressionism a household term. Autumn Rhythm is an example of the ‘drip’ style where paint is poured onto the flat canvas. With the use of his body and large gestural movements, Pollock creates rhythmic lines and movement that encompass the entire canvas, giving all areas of the painting equal importance with no hierarchy to line, color or form.
