Mona Lisa (c 1503-1519)
Leonardo da Vinci, Italian, 1452-1519 Oil on Poplar Panel, 21"x30", Musée du Louvre. Paris, France.
Considered the most famous and most recognizable painting in the world, it is supposedly a portrait of Lisa del Giocondo. The del Giocondo's never took possession of the painting. da Vinci first painted on it for 4 years, waited a few years and painted on it another 3, before waiting until just before his death to finish the work. Although protected studiously for centuries, it never really gained any credence as a great work of art until the 1800s (300 years after it was painted). The painting has been studied in the greatest detail, and it has been believed to be the portrait of 8 different women, and even a portrait of Leonardo himself.
