The Persistence of Memory (1931)

Picture
Salvador Dali, Spanish, 1904-1989
Oil on Canvas, 13"x9.5", Museum of Modern Art, New York.
Salvador Dali was an accomplished painter who adopted Surrealism in 1928.  His bizarre and often striking images were based on Freudian subliminal dream sequences in which realistic objects symbolized something other than what they appeared to be.  He was a highly imaginative man given to eccentric and attention-seeking behaviors as is evident in the broad array of his work in the Dali museum located in Figueres, Spain.

My memories are a youth dominated by black and white, and the bursting into light and color when I entered the age of self-discovery and freedom.

Time, space and memory are all fluid.  Dali was enthralled with Freud’s theories of the subconscious and often used images that symbolized something else.  What do you think this painting means?
